Types of mosquitoes in New Jersey

Many mosquitoes can bite you in your yard but all mosquitoes do not present the same level of threat. Some are worse than others. In the United States, there are two species of mosquito that are considered to be the greatest vectors for dangerous diseases such as West Nile, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika. They are the Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito) and the Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito). The distribution of A. aegypti ends just above Morganville and A. albopictus can be found all the way up into Southern Maine. If you have these mosquitoes established in your yard, you are at greater risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

Why did we use the word established? Don't mosquitoes just fly around everywhere and attack anyone they come in contact with? No. It doesn't work that way.

Think about this: Have you ever gone out into your backyard and had a dozen mosquitoes start to swarm around you? How do you think those mosquitoes got to you so fast? It is because they were already in your yard when you went out there.

Three things you should know about mosquitoes

Mosquitoes don't fly well

Have you noticed that mosquitoes can be deterred by a strong breeze? They're not great at flying. So the mosquitoes that attack you as soon as you go out into your yard are probably mosquitoes that have been resting in your landscaping, waiting for an opportunity to get a blood meal.

Mosquitoes don't have good eyesight

When you go out into your yard, mosquitoes in your neighbor's yard can't see you. The eyesight of a mosquito is so bad, they have to fly low to the ground and use the lit sky behind mammals to zero in on their silhouettes. They also use chemical scents, heat, carbon dioxide, moisture, and other detection methods that are best employed up close.

Mosquitoes don't travel far

This is especially true of Aedes mosquitoes. That means packs of mosquitoes aren't moving through your yard. If you get swarmed, it isn't because you ran into a random swarm. Those mosquitoes were already in your yard, hiding in your vegetation.

Where do mosquitoes come from?

Mosquitoes may come into your yard from your neighbor's yard but it isn't because they saw you and came flying. They spread from yard to yard, drawn in by conditions that are ideal for their survival such as the presence of vegetation, moisture, and stagnant water. The more of these you have in your yard, the more attractive it will be to encroaching mosquitoes and the more likely you are to have mosquitoes hiding and breeding in your landscaping.

Understanding Mosquito Control

Since mosquitoes come into a yard and establish themselves, you can actually influence how often you'll be bitten when you go into your yard. If you have seasonal mosquito reduction, your yard will have fewer mosquitoes and you're going to get fewer bites, especially bites from Aedes mosquitoes. Treatments applied by a professional work to target mosquito hiding places and use them to reduce mosquito populations, not just in your yard but in your neighborhood. If you've never tried mosquito abatement services, give it a try and see what a difference it can make.
