What are ground beetles?
Often confused with Oriental cockroaches and other types of roaches, ground beetles are one of the largest groups of beetles in North America.
What do ground beetles look like?
Most species of ground beetles are shiny black, have elongated body shape, ridged wing covers, and threadlike antennae. Adult ground beetles range in size from 1/16 to 1 inch in length.
Are ground beetles harmful?
No, ground beetles are not harmful. They do not bite or sting and are considered a nuisance pest indoors.
What are ground beetles attracted to?
Ground beetles like to hide out during the day so if your yard and property have logs, rocks, leaf litter, and other debris that these insects can hide under, you’re likely to see these bugs.
During the nighttime, ground beetles will come out to find dinner, which is typically soft-bodied insects. If your property has a surplus of pests, ground beetles will probably show up.
Lighting is another attractant for ground beetles.

- Seal all gaps, cracks, and openings on the foundation or elsewhere on the exterior of the house.
- Rake up leaves and clear up other debris in your yard.
- Install outdoor lighting that repels bugs.
- Repair or replace window screens and install screened doors if you like to keep your entry doors open.
- Unclog gutters to ensure water is able to pass through correctly.
