What do yellow jackets look like?

Yellow jackets have a very distinctive appearance with hairless bodies and very elongated thin waists. Their heads and faces are black or yellow in color and their smooth bodies are generally patterned with yellow and black.

Another feature that stands out with these stinging insects is that they have elongated wings that fold laterally against their bodies when at rest.  Adults grow to between 3/8th and 5/8th of an inch in length.

Are yellow jackets dangerous?

Yes, yellow jackets are dangerous.  You really don’t want these wasps nesting in or on your home nor do you want a nest in an area where your family visits often because these stinging insects will sting if provoked and have the ability to do so repeatedly and could end up being several yellow jackets as they live in large colonies with numbers in the thousands.

Yellow jacket stings can be very painful, cause large red welts to form, and their venom has the ability to trigger very serious allergic reactions in some individuals.

Why do I have a yellow jacket problem?

Yellow jackets nest in the ground and under the eaves of the homes and garages, behind wall voids, in chimneys, and in attics.  As late summer and early fall approach, colonies will be quite large and they will start foraging for more food.  Oftentimes it's soda and BBQ staples that attract them to your property.  These pests love sweets and protein.

How do I make my property less attractive to yellow jackets?

You can’t stop yellow jackets from flying onto your property but you can do your best to make your property less attractive to these stinging insects.  We recommend the following prevention tips:

  • Seal gaps found in your home’s foundation, exterior walls, and along your roof line.
  • Make sure that your chimney has a tight cap on it and that any cracks in it are sealed.
  • Replace loose or missing roof shingles.
  • Fill in holes in the ground and around your property.
  • Keep outdoor trashcans away from the exterior of your home and making sure they have tight fitting lids.
  • When eating outdoors, keep dishes covered and sweet drinks sealed.
  • Clean up crumbs and spills quickly during outdoor gatherings.
