What do brown-banded cockroaches look like?

Adult brown-banded cockroaches grow to about ½ an inch in length. They are light brown and have very distinctive banding going across their wings. Females have a shorter and stouter body shape than the males. Also, because the female’s wings do not cover her entire abdomen, she is incapable of flight. Adult males, however, are very active and will quickly move by flying away if they are disturbed.

Are brown-banded cockroaches dangerous?

As you can probably imagine, having brown-banded roaches or other types of roaches living in your home is very dangerous. They are known to carry bacteria, parasitic worms, and human pathogens on their bodies. Before entering homes, they are often crawling around in sewage, garbage, drains, and animal excrement. Also, their shed skins and excrement can trigger allergic reactions and cause asthma attacks in people, especially in young kids.

What conditions attract brown-banded cockroaches?

Brown-banded cockroaches prefer environments that offer temperatures that are over 80 degrees and that are dry. Inside homes and other buildings, they are more often than not found in higher locations like in the upper portions of cabinets in kitchen and bathrooms far away from a water source. Other places that these heat loving cockroaches like to hide include behind large appliances, behind door frames, inside furniture, and behind outlets.
