Most Common Ticks in Monroe Township, NJ
There are a wide variety of ticks species found thriving all across the United States, in our area of New Jersey we have three species that are most common and cause the most problems for Monroe homeowners: American dog ticks, brown dog ticks, and deer ticks. The pest professionals at Arrow Pest Control want to help you identify each species and understand why they are such a problem to have on your Monroe property.
American Dog Tick
Adult American dog ticks have flat, oval-shaped bodies that grow to about 1/8 inch in length, they increase in size up to 1/2 of an inch after having a blood meal. Their bodies are brown with white or yellow markings. Males of this species have tiny pits across their backs. While these ticks do not spread Lyme disease, they are responsible for spreading diseases that can make people and pets sick including Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Brown Dog Tick
Adult brown dog ticks are reddish-brown in color and their bodies have a flattened oval shape. Before feeding, adults are about 1/8th of an inch long; after having a blood meal, they can expand to about 1/2 of an inch in length and turn more bluish-gray in color. As their name suggests brown dog ticks prefer to feed on canine blood. While it is rare for these ticks to feed on people it is still important to protect yourself and pets from them because they carry and transmit diseases that can make people sick including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, along with being able to transmit canine ehrlichiosis and other diseases to your dogs.
Deer Ticks (Blacklegged Ticks)
Deer ticks have an oval shaped body that is brownish-orange in color, their black legs are darker in color than the rest of their body. Before feeding, adult deer ticks are between 1/16th and 1/8th of an inch in length; after feeding they become larger in size. Deer ticks are considered to be dangerous to both people and pets because infected ticks spread several diseases including the potentially debilitating Lyme disease, which is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi.
